Get every tribute from the arena, plus Gale, for $1.99 each.

Though I do love surprises, I don’t like to be surprised when I am spending money. I don’t buy grab bags or closeout t-shirt bargains or other similar merchandise if I can’t see what it is first. Sure, I only want to spend money on things that I actually want and need—but I also don’t like buying junk that I don’t need and wasting both time and resources (unless it’s, say, prizes for game night or something like that, in which others might like the items).

Even so, I could not help but buy a few Hunger Games mini action figures when I heard that they were being sold for $1.99 at Walgreens. Each figure comes in a wrapped package that features the mockingjay emblem in fire that has come to be symbolic of the series. The rest of the package is black and opaque, ensuring that you cannot tell which tribute (or Gale) will be inside. It’s just like those Lego minifigs or Hello Kitty packages that you buy as party favors or stocking stuffers. Each tribute is nestled inside a small plastic mold to ensure it will not break, which is pretty wasteful if you ask me.

They are definitely not worth the price; they are tiny and their features are a bit obscure, making them worth maybe 99 cents, if that. But I still love them simply because they are attached to my biggest obsession since Harry Potter and I have been waiting for this movie since it was announced, which feels like so long ago (and we only have 20 days left until the film is released). I do like my little figures, though I haven’t managed to acquire a Katniss, Peeta, Thresh, or Rue yet (the only ones that I really want!). I do have a Cato, Gale, and Foxface, along with a couple of other nameless tributes. Each week I’ll probably continue collecting one or two more; so far, I have not had any doubles yet, though I’ll have to knock on wood in hopes of keeping it that way.

Some people are saying that it’s annoying that Gale is even included; he, too, is on a pedestal labeled with his district number. I will have to agree, and I think it’s largely because merchandisers are pushing the so-called love trilogy in order to sell more products. I don’t think that needs to be done to sell this story, however, since it’s so much more compelling than any other drivel that people are comparing it with.
